We Got Started Because Something Wasn’t Right
When Mark Hood got into the construction business, the industry wasn’t known for its collaboration. There was a lot of infighting between everyone involved. And very little fighting for what the client actually needed.
Mark noticed this and wanted to take a different approach. He saw an opportunity to focus more on building what owners need and less on competing with other folks and their ideas.
Nearly four decades later, that mindset has paid off. We’ve had the privilege of working with remarkable clients over the years and building some of South Carolina’s most iconic spaces, from houses of worship to places of learning.
It’s Really About the People

Early on, we adopted the mantra “Build It the Right Way.” It had a lot to do with how we approach projects. But it was also about our company. As the organization grew, we thought deeply about what we wanted Hood Construction to be.
The continuity and longevity of our team make this an easy one for us to answer. People don’t just stay here for the paycheck. They’ve found a place where their career can grow. Where they contribute to meaningful projects that they’re proud to tell others about.
To build things for our clients the right way, we needed the right people in place. It’s a mindset that’s guided who we’ve added to the team. We place a lot of emphasis on how someone fits our culture. And we look for people who can become leaders in our company.
It’s served us and our clients well. Many of our folks have stayed with us for a long time. They’ve grown in their roles and taken on new responsibilities and challenges. And that experience matters. When we go to meet with a client about potential projects, one of the most common questions we hear is, “How many projects have you worked on together?”
This mentality is pervasive beyond our employees. Our trade partners are embedded in the work we do. We’ve carefully selected the folks we work with and hold them to the same standards we have for our employees.

Better Outcomes Happen When We Work Together
If you were to walk into our office, you’d notice our teams talking, discussing projects, and sharing ideas.
We don’t work in silos. Everyone at Hood Construction can collaborate on a project. Working together, regardless of the job description, is what leads to great results for our clients.
Outside our office, we work closely with architects, engineers, and our other partners who support our clients. Those relationships are what lead to our clients getting the result they’ve envisioned.
Building Our Community

Our firm has called Columbia home since the beginning. The work we’ve done and the connections we’ve built are all based right here in South Carolina. The places we’ve built have a real impact on our communities and the people who call them home. It means a lot to us to have played a role in shaping the world around us.
