City Market

Historic Renovation

Project Summary

City Market is a comprehensive adaptive re-use of 19th century warehouse buildings consisting of 705, 707, and 711 Gervais Street in Columbia. It houses multiple restaurants, including Grill Marks regional gourmet burger chain, two other craft eateries, Twisted Spur Brewing, and two loft apartments.

The formerly painted brick was meticulously stripped to expose the natural coloring underneath, and as much of the original ceilings, flooring, and windows were kept to retain the original character of the buildings. In the Grill Marks restaurant, an open air patio was created by utilizing the former warehouseĆs roll up door and window openings, which allows natural light and air circulation for patio diners. This important redevelopment also allows for pedestrian walkthroughs and outdoor patios for dining that were previously unused, connecting the new restaurants to neighboring Lady Street.
